In spite of the fact that he has been frozen out of the national team since February when Nigeria lifted the Africa Cup of Nations, Ikechukwu Uche is hoping for a recall to the national team.
In a press conference on Wednesday, the Villarreal striker stated that he is aware of the stiff competition in the national team, but has not given up hopes of playing for Nigeria.
"I’ll see what I can do here. If I do well at Villarreal, then I’ll have my chances and in the end, it’s up to the national team manager to decide. I’m focused on my daily work and know that I will have options," Uche said.
The 29-year-old however maintained that his mind is focused on putting up impressive performances for Villarreal, and helping them record a positive result in this weekend's derby against Levante.
"I have to keep up the same work and goals, which is what is asked of me. I’m scoring and I want to keep doing that, though the primary thing is to think about the team and that we can keep getting good results, as we have in recent weeks."
"The next and most difficult game is always the next one. We know the difficulty that we could face on Sunday and we’re working hard to make sure we do well.
"The team is on a good run in every respect and we hope to keep ourselves in this line, he said."
Uche has scored four goals in five starts (10 appearances) for Villarreal this season.
